I have a yard machine splitter. Everything works good until the wedge makes contact with wood. When the second stage kicks in it takes from 4 to 5 seconds before the wedge starts through the wood. The wood is clean with no knots etc. I found an adjusting screw on the valve. I turned it all the way in and it knocked about 1 second off that time. Have also replaced filter.

How old is the splitter? If it has some age on it then it could be the pump. You can get a hydraulic pressure gauge and test the port pressures before replacing the pump to see if the pump is up to the job. Could also be the valve or cylinder.

Yes,if the cylinder is bypassing,it could cause this.
